So, you have heard a lot about it …. the Director Identification Number.  Another government issued numbered, this time in relation to the Corporations Act.  Have you got your number yet?  If not, then here is some information to help you get across the line.

You need a Director Identification Number (Director ID) if you are a director of a company, registered Australian body, registered foreign company or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation.  A Director ID is specific to you.  It is a unique identifier that you will keep forever, regardless of which entity you are a director of.  It is different to your tax file number and any other government issued number (eg Services Australia, military, other).

You need to apply for it. No-one else can apply on your behalf.

You will require a myGovID account.  This is different to your myGov account.  Information regarding how to get a myGovID account is included in the links below.

There are two ways to apply:

  • Online – this is the fastest way to apply.  For information regarding which documents are required and instructions on how to apply online, click here.
  • Australian Passport - identity documents, Director ID requirements, photo ID

By phone.  For information about how to apply by phone, click here.

You need to do this now.  The due date for obtaining a Director ID was 30th November 2022 for existing directors. From 1st December 2022, anybody becoming a director for the first time will need to obtain one prior to commencing in the role.

Once you have your director ID number (or if you already have your Director ID), please let us know the details.  We need to record the number with the company records held with ASIC.  ASIC is responsible for enforcing director ID offences.  It is a criminal offence not to have one.
